Soar Maritimes offers getaway inspiration for Maritimers. Here we feature the snowy escape of Deer Valley, Utah.
Growing up as a kid in Canada winter memories were a favourite past time. Bundled up in layers of clothing I would venture off in search of the best sledding hill. I could spend hours rosy-cheeked, immersed in snow, never feeling winter’s chill, until my winter adventure would come to a halt with the promise of warm cocoa waiting for me back inside.
Yet over the years after the first snowfall winters often-magical lustre would begin to fade. Perhaps it was being caught up in city life, but somewhere along the way I had lost sight of the joy winter activities can evoke; skating along an icy rink cross-country skiing through freshly laden snow. So when I found myself strapped into a pair of rather high-tech looking snowshoes in Park City Utah, I was ready for the adventure.
White Pine Touring has been traversing Park City’s outdoor terrain since the 1970s. From cross-country to snowshoeing, four hundred and fifty miles of pristine trails and snow-capped mountains surround the stunning terrain. My guide and I trek into four feet of fresh-powdered snow almost effortlessly, barely sinking in. In the quietude I can’t help but to reflect on what an ingenious invention snowshoes are.
Centuries ago, Native Americans fashioned together the concept made from birch trees. Off they would venture in the harsh winter months somewhat prepared for the arduous journey ahead.
We trek through the trees until we arrive upon an open mountain Vista of sheer white with the sound of downhill skiers whooshing by kicking up snow in their wake.
Ski Town Bound in Utah
Deer Valley has been touted as the best ski resort in the US. Family owned since 1981, the Rocky Mountain Wasatch range envelops Deer Valley. With over 2,000 acres of varied topography there is something for everyone, with Alpine inspired lodging and superb dining. Yet what makes Deer Valley so distinct is that it’s a ski only resort. You won’t find snowboarders on these slopes, only skiers gliding down the freshest of snow. The resort is also known for its exceptional all day kids ski school program for ages 3 and up.
My nine year old is a novice skier; she had never been on a pair in her life. Yet with absolutely no trepidation we headed to the gear shop to get her fitted for ski boots, a helmet and a pair of “cool” goggles before meeting her affable instructor at the base of the hill. My intentions were to linger awhile to see how she adapted. However, I was met with a goggled glare and the words, “I feel confident; you can go”. From riding a magic carpet to zigzagging through candyland on her skis, Deer Valley’s adventure club was a hit! You even get to take home a little report card each day on what was covered. Handing it to me my nine year old proudly declared skiing is “EPIC”.
After an “Epic Day” at Deer Valley, indulging in a culinary smorgasbord is a must, but not until we embarked on a perfect prelude to a feast – a sleigh ride through the fluffy moon lit snow. Our magical sleigh ride led me back to the entrance of Fireside Dining. Greeted by the smell of a roasting fire and a cozy alpine atmosphere, Fireside Dining and its four roaring stone fireplaces offer a taste of the European Alps.
Raclette, a tasty cheese from Switzerland, is melting from the open flame. I grab a plate and quickly dip my crusty bread into the melted glory. Next, I savour the roasted lamb twirling around the fire’s edge. It’s followed by a Swiss veal and wild mushroom stew that left my palette tingling for more. Be sure to save room for the fondue – white chocolate, dark chocolate and caramel to dip the variance of fresh fruit in!
Swim and Slumber
From wherever you are in Deer Valley, you can hop on a free shuttle. Most of the lodges also offer complimentary Cadillac car service. I stayed at The Silver Baron with its rustic charm; you can even spot photos throughout the lodge capturing snippets of Park City Utah’s mining heritage. The lodge’s tall timber frames invite you to curl up by the fire, or grab the ever-enticing free cookies and hot chocolate offered in the lobby from 4 to 6pm daily.
They even have a heated pool out back with a slide that was perpetually calling my daughter to slide down! Out into the blowing snow we traipsed, robes in tow. With one leap we were in the pool and it was blissful. I could smell the crisp mountain air, and the night sky was filled with an abundance of stars.
Back in my cozy two-bedroom suite my daughter and I sleepily revelled in the day’s tales, deciding to shake it up the next night of our stay with a soak in our private hot tub. Every unit at Silver Baron has one. Deer Valley had most certainly made me happily embrace winter all over again.
