Prince Edward Island truly comes alive in the summer, offering something for everyone, from pristine beaches, to top-notch golfing, to gorgeous scenery and, of course, fabulous seafood fare. Throw in a local brew and you are all set. The craft beer scene on the island has really evolved over the last few years, with new breweries popping up all over the place. I’ve asked the brewers to share their picks of great summer beers to enjoy while exploring the “Gentle Island”.
Moth Lane Brewing
Moth Lane Brewing sits on Conway Narrows, and offers the perfect spot to drink your beer on the patio, which looks out on the local oyster beds. Brewmaster Eric Wagner says his Motor Boat’r Blond is a great summer beer. The blond is a SMaSH ale, meaning single malt and single hop, that weighs in at 6.5% ABV and a low bitter 28 IBU. Eric also really likes his Oyster Thief Stout. This beer gives the drinker a sense of place with the addition of local oysters and a slightly lighter 5% ABV and 32 IBU.
Rose Valley at Barnone Brewing
This brewery is located in a barn that amazingly houses the entire brewing operation, it even has a stage and seating for musical performances and a reading room. Barnone Brewery Owner Don Campbell says his Summer Sessions Ale is a great summer beer. The 4.5% ABV Blond is well balanced light bodied beer with a full-hop flavour. Perfect to enjoy on the farm during a Thursday evening this summer. The brewery encourages patrons to bring food and enjoy it with their beer onsite at one of the many picnic tables.
Upstreet Craft Brewing
Located in Charlottetown, Upstreet Craft Brewing is noted for it’s fun loving attitude, community involvement and of course great local beer. Partner Mike Hogan says their core brand Ruby Social Strawberry Rhubarb Witbier fits the bill for a great summer sipper at 5% ABV. Upstreet describes it as “The right mix of sweet Island flavours and salty Island characters is the recipe for a great summer afternoon”.
PEI Brewing Company
The largest brewery in Canada’s smallest Atlantic province, PEI Brewing Company produces its own beers as well as bottling the famous Gahan brand. Its state of the art facility makes for a place to linger sipping local brew. With its large taproom, catwalks above the brewery floor for touring the brewery. Their flagship Beach Chair Lager is an approachable craft beer and the perfect go to on hot summer days. Fun fact is this beer was the first one canned in Atlantic Canada, great for the Canadian outdoor lifestyle.
Copper Bottom Brewing
Opening this summer in Montague, 45 km east of Charlottetown, is Copper Bottom Brewing. Husband and wife team Ken Spears and folk singer-songwriter Ashley Condon, who share a passion for craft beer and music, are behind the project and wanted to create something in their community with a focus on small-batch ales. Look for their taproom and music venue to be open soon, and get your hop on!
