Grab your girlfriends, leave the car behind and make your way to Prince Edward Island, Canada’s smallest province, for a mini luxury inspired getaway! Charlottetown is quintessentially lovely, especially in the summer when rows of bright coloured flowers line the historic streets. It’s when local restaurants open up the patios serving up the best seaside fare. PEI has an undeniable charm that lingers in the salty air; throw in some true Maritime hospitality and Charlottetown makes for the perfect weekend.
Getting To PEI
One of the best ways of getting to the Island sans driving is the Maritime Bus. With locations all over the Maritimes to hop on, taking the bus allows you to sit back and watch the idyllic scenery roll by. Bonus: most of the buses have free WiFi, and you don’t have to pay for the Confederation Bridge toll on the way back.
Ramp up your stay with a suite at the Holman Grand Hotel, which boasts gorgeous views of Downtown Charlottetown. The one bedroom ultra modern Harbour Light Suite is perfect for a girl’s night away. It even comes with its own Jacuzzi tub, and superb spa inspired Aveda products that leave you smelling minty fresh. Several other suite and room options are available.
You don’t have to go far to find fabulous food on the Island. Redwater Rustic Grille is adjacent to the hotel and is a fabulous spot to indulge at, with an extensive menu and excellent wine list with over 120 labels to choose from. You and your girlfriends will be belting out East Coast inspired tunes before the night is over! Must eats are the crab cakes made with local crab from Belle River. The tomato bacon chutney, mixed with the flavour of the crab, will not disappoint, and the PEI mussels are always a must. Travel Tip: order several appetizers and go to town!
Catch up on some extra zzzz’s at the comfy Holman Grand and then make your way to a late brunch at Terre Rouge. They are all about local sourcing at this “Happening” spot in town. The concept here is a simple one, considering so much of life on PEI involves farming. Get to know the farmer, foragers, and fisherman and cultivate good relationships, then serve up superb dishes with all the fresh foods.
Try the mushroom toast – a true favourite among locals for good reason! Made with sourdough bread piled high with mushrooms, kale, tomato, goat cheese and smoked aioli, it’s never to early to pair it with a local brew like Upstreet’s IPA. Are you are a lover of a warm cup of steaming seafood chowder? Local seafood, creamy broth and cheddar biscuits on the side – need we say more?
Have you ever had a dry water massage before? If you haven’t, you have to try it out. Grand Senses Spa, right beside the Holman Grand, is the place to give this unique concept a try. You lay on a bed made of water as massage balls shift up and down your body. With each ebb and flow you truly feel the stress melt away. You can even control the movements with a remote choosing to focus on certain areas like the shoulders, lower back or legs. Try it for 15 or 30 minutes; either way you will be asking yourself, “How can I get one of these for home?” It’s the perfect end to a lovely Charlottetown mini-getaway.
